Which Grease Gun Do You Need? A Practical Buyer’s Guide
From: Dynaline
Grease guns are used to apply lubricant, typically grease, to mechanical parts that require consistent friction reduction. This includes everything from bearings and bushings to trailer hitch components, machinery arms, suspension parts, and pivot joints. Basically, if it moves and you want it to keep moving, grease is your best friend.
Proper lubrication reduces wear and tear, prevents corrosion, and extends the life of your equipment. But not all grease guns are built for the same jobs, and choosing the right one makes your work faster, cleaner, and more effective.
Lever Grease Guns – High Pressure for Tough Jobs
If you’re looking for maximum output and heavy-duty reliability, the lever-style grease gun is a classic. These are built to deliver high-pressure output with each pump and are great when you’re servicing larger machines with tough-to-move fittings.
- The 11083 is your entry point: reliable, consistent, and powerful. With a 10,000 psi max rating, it’s more than capable of pushing grease through clogged or dried-out fittings.
- The 11085A steps it up with a heavier build for those using a grease gun daily in rugged environments. More durable, more comfortable under pressure.
- The 11082C introduces a variable stroke lever, giving you control over output volume. That means short, tight strokes when you’re in a cramped space or long, full ones when you’re on a wide-open rig.
These are all best for: farm machinery, commercial trailers, excavators, log splitters, and other high-pressure applications where you need to move a lot of grease or deal with resistance.
Pistol Grip Grease Guns – One-Handed Control
Pistol grip grease guns are all about control and comfort. You can use them with one hand, making them a great option when you’re reaching around suspension components, under trailers, or working in awkward angles.
- The 11087A includes a 5-inch rigid extension, which is perfect for reaching general fittings with ease.
- The 11084A combines an 18-inch flexible hose with a rigid tip, giving you the best of both worlds, flexibility for tight access and precision when needed.
- The 11066 is a professional-grade tool, featuring 3-way loading so you can load by cartridge, bulk, or suction and a comfortable pistol grip that feels good even after 20+ pumps.
These are best for: truck service shops, DIYers with larger trailers or UTVs, field service techs, and anyone who needs mobility and ease-of-use.
Mini Grease Gun – Compact and Portable
Sometimes you don’t need a full-sized grease gun, you just need something compact that can get the job done in a pinch. That’s where the mini pistol grip comes in.
- The 11089A puts out 2000 PSI, making it ideal for small fittings and less-demanding jobs. It’s light, easy to store, and quick to deploy when you just need a touch of grease to stop a squeak or keep things moving.
These are best for: lawn tractors, UTVs, small trailers, garden equipment, and backup kits, or those “just a little grease will do it” moments.
Don’t Forget the Grease
Of course, all of these tools need something to work with.
These grease guns take multi-purpose lithium grease that is designed to handle heat, pressure, and harsh environments. It sticks where you put it and resists washout, making it perfect for chassis work, wheel bearings, pivot points, trailer hitches, and general maintenance.
You can usually buy these in solo or bulk, which if you know your going to be using a lot, we would recommend saving some money and getting some in bulk.
Grease guns come in all shapes and sizes and when it comes to getting the job done, the right one makes all the difference.
- Want raw pressure and control? Go with a lever gun.
- Need one-handed convenience? Pick up a pistol grip.
- Want something portable? The mini is the one.
And no matter which one fits your setup, Dynaline has the grease, the accessories, and the know-how to back you up.
